Brrr! It is really cold in South West England today but I am relieved that we are not enduring the snow that is affecting some of the country. Whilst I love snow for the photographic opportunities, I do not like the logistical problems it causes. The kids would be happy to have snow though.
Luckily, I completed a nice little knitting project last week the result of which has proven to be indispensable over the last few days in this cold snap.
I jumped on the bandwagon, as they say, and knitted up the Baa-ble Hat. This is a free pattern from Shetland Wool Week which has been so popular since it was published that you can't fail to see it if you frequent Revelry or search for #knitting on Instagram! Anyway, those cute little sheep on the hat drew me in and I had to make it right away :)
I started knitting it on New Year's Eve whilst I sat watching Jool's Holland on the TV.
I Knitted most of the hat on long DPN's because I couldn't find a circular in the correct size and I just wanted to begin knitting it. I wouldn't recommend double pointed needles until you get closer the crown of the hat, it was fine and I managed to get it done but a circular needle would have been so much easier! Having said that it is a great pattern and would be perfect for people who haven't tried fair isle / colour work before, the thick yarn and good sized needles make it a nice easy colour work project.
I knitted the hat using the recommended yarn and needle sizes. I did choose slightly different colour yarns to those on the pattern as the ones used for the sample were out of stock. I used these colours:
Teviot (0136)
Ivory (0343)
Cosmos (1340)
Leprechaun (0259)
I did find that the hat came out quite large but I can get away with it. If I made it again for myself I would probably go down a needle size.
This was such a fun knit and it is such a good hat! I think it is the warmest hat I own and when it is cold like it is now I don't care if I look a bit silly wearing it. Charlotte loves it and she wants me to make her one in pink and purple. I may try to do hers in a double knitting and see what size it comes out.
I love my new hat, let's hope Charlotte doesn't steal it before I can make one for her!

Love this hat! It's all over my Facebook knitting group. I just finished one, using 68 stitches, modifying graph, but didn't fit my 2 year old. Starting another one. One blogger suggested 90 stitches for the adult, said it fit better. Too bad they didn't write it in all sizes, it's so popular! Yours is very cute! I've also seen it without the turned up brim, it's nice too!

Have fun knitting it. I have the yarn for Charlotte and Amy's now so I am going to try and alter the pattern to fit (forgot to order DK instead and have Aran again!)
